Snatching the Pebble, by Minto Roy
Tough match today against Master Lee. Gord is my Golf Yoda, my Golf Budha. He is the boiling pot of water that David Caradine had to lift with only his wrists to escape from the Shaolin monastery in the 70-series Kung Fu.
A summary of my Match Play against Master Lee:
- The first two holes the Benevolent Master Lee gave me some early confidence and allowed me to go 2 up.
- The next three holes he reminded me that snatching the pebble would not be easy and tied up our match.
- On the 6th hole, Master Lee had a 12 foot putt for birdie, but somehow, I holed a 55 foot downhill putt for birdie that shook the usually stoic Master. I believe his zen commentary when the putt dropped was, “You Moth—F-ker !
- Master Lee quickly re-focused his Chakras and we finished the the front nine all even and decided to have a beer at the turn.
- On the 11th hole, I made bogey and Master Lee made a routine par and went 1 up.
- On the 12th tee box, Master Lee reached into his golf bag and threw out approximately 3 pounds of sand hoping to lessen the guilt of his 7 handicap.
- We tied holes 12 and 13, however, on the 14th I made a 20 foot downhill birdie putt that barely dropped-in as the edge of the cup miraculously grabbed a filament of fraying ink off the Bollywood logo of my ProV.
- I hit a good drive on 15 but ended up in deep rough 147 yards out. I was thinking “just hit it somewhere close to the green and chip and putt for par”. Accidentally, I hit a 7 iron into the hole for an eagle 2.
- Despite being 2 down with 3 to play Master Lee, never gave up. He made a fantastic 15 foot putt on #16 to extend the match but, was now Dormie
- We both missed the green on #17 however, Gord hit a tough 40 yard bunker shot to 2 feet and made an easy par. I hit my chip to 12 feet and once again using the fraying ink of my Bollywood logo made the putt and closed out the match with a par.
Even though I won today, I still think Gordie is one of the top guys to beat in Match Play. I have no doubt that Master Lee, might win in the consolation bracket and still win the Match Play championship.
